AWM Teacher Partnership Update

Update from two of our participants

Message from Padmanabhan Seshaiyer on March 16, 2009:

I have really enjoyed working with Kris on helping prepare their students for AMC competitions. I have enjoyed interacting with the kids in supplementing with more concepts. I will let Kris share more on this with you.

Besides, I also had the opportunity to mentor one of the students Alicia xxxxx (who was introduced by Kris and Alicia was also mentioned in the AWM article from July 2008) for her science fair project and I am very happy to let you know Alicia's project which involved applications of math to medicine has won the following:

  • Grand Prize Winner/Best in Fair, First place and best project in Medicine & Health at the Northern Virginia Regional Science & Engineering Fair
  • 2009 Intel ISEF Finalist
  • 1st place in CIA /invitation to CIA Science Fair Recognition Ceremony
  • Patent And Trademark Office Society/1st place Certificate of Outstanding Achievement
  • 1st place United states Army/Certificate of Merit-Life Sciences , received bronze medallion for science/engineering excellence

Alicia has been invited to participate in the state fair to be held in the first week of April. She will also be attending the Intel ISEF (all expenses paid!) this year is going to be held in Reno, Nevada during May 10-15 2009.

I am very happy that the AWM Teacher Partnership program has helped initiate such a wonderful collaboration!

Kris Kappmeyer added on March 20, 2009:

I want to echo what Padhu has said. I am so grateful for my AMW partnership with Mr. Padhu Seshaiyer. He has worked tirelessly with our math team students providing such great mathematical insights. I also am so pleased that Alicia xxxxx was chosen for so many wonderful awards, and I know that Padhu was instrumental in helping her understand the math embedded in her project. What Padhu may not know is that Haley xxxxx, another of our math team students who Padhu has coached, was the runner up / alternate for the trip to Reno!

I would like to thank you for creating our fruitful partnership, and I truly hope that I can provide Padhu with at least some of the support that he so gladly offers me. He truly has gone above and beyond, and I have gained so much from our collaboration. Thank you once again…

(Note: At the request of their teacher, the students’ last names were taken off from the messages.)
