Blackbird, Fly: The Legacy of Vivienne Malone-Mayes and African-American Women within AWM
As a woman of color in often male-dominated mathematical spaces, there have been many times when I felt the need to withhold my true self in order to be seen as professional or competent. This can be especially true in situations where women are managing the bulk of home and family responsibilities. But what would it look like if we brought more of ourselves to the workspace? How would our classrooms and research experiences be different? In this talk, I’ll share my personal journey to “whole-selfness” and the commitment needed from departments and colleges to create environments conducive to this type of authenticity.
