Building up R programming skills while learning Elementary Statistics
Computer programming skills are not normally associated with the study of mathematics. However, in writing the book "Elementary Statistics: A guide to Data Analysis Using R" we start from the premise that R is the ideal programming environment that can make a crucial difference for students just starting to assimilate basic concept of Statistics. [Read More...]

Enhancing statistical literacy through group experiments and case studies
In this talk we discuss the effectiveness of learning statistics through group experiments and case studies. Group experiments enable the students to see statistics through various lenses and different perspectives that diverse interactions bring. For example, we will discuss a group experiment example from the textbook that utilizes real-time data [Read More...]

Correlation induced by missing spatial covariates
Residual spatial correlation in linear regression models of environmental data is often attributed to spatial patterns in related covariates omitted from the fitted model. We connect the nonunique decomposition of error in geostatistical models into trend and covariance components to the similarly nonunique decomposition of mixed models into mixed and random [Read More...]

Deficiency of SF1 reduces intestinal polyp development.
Splicing factor 1 (SF1) is a ubiquitous alternative splicing factor that generates alternate RNA messages from coding DNA, leading to greater protein diversity in cells. We utilized genetically modified mouse strains to assess how SF1 levels affect intestinal tumorigenesis. Genetically modified Sf1+/− mice express reduced levels of SF1 in cells. Mice with [Read More...]
