Programs

The Association for Women in Mathematics’ volunteer committees develop and deliver a wide variety of programs to support women and girls as they explore and pursue careers in the mathematical sciences. There is always space for people to get involved! Participate in the programs, join an organizing committee, or volunteer at an event. Most importantly, find the community of people like you who want to support you in your endeavors and who also need your support! Reach out to understand how you can join the AWM community.

SK Days

For more than twenty years Sonia Kovalevsky Days (SK Days) have been organized by AWM members and held at colleges and universities throughout the country. A day-long event for elementary, middle, or high school students, SK Days help encourage young women to continue their study of mathematics while strengthening partnerships between local schools and high education institutions.

To increase awareness of women’s ongoing contributions, AWM and Math for America  co-sponsor an essay contest for biographies of contemporary women in the mathematical sciences.

Chat with a Mathematician

The AWM facilitates visits (primarily virtual, but in-person when possible) by professional mathematicians, math graduate students, and undergraduate math majors, to K-12 schools and classrooms. Visits might be centered around a mathematical activity while others may be more of a chat with the goal of expanding the horizons of K-12 students to include the possibility of becoming a mathematician. Many K-12 students may not know that you can earn a living doing fun math problems!
