AWM Student Chapter Innovation Grants

The Association for Women in Mathematics has over a hundred student chapters that organize meetings, activities, lectures, or conferences for their respective members. To further strengthen and support the work done by our student chapters, the AWM Executive Committee has established its Student Chapter Innovation Grants. Active Student Chapters are eligible to apply for grants of up to $2,500. These funds are intended to provide some support to Student Chapters in their efforts to enhance the mathematical communities at their institutions. Some examples of such engagement include hosting Sofya Kovalevskaya Days on their campus, inviting inspirational speakers, creating a mini-symposium, or hosting impactful professional development workshops that will benefit their members mathematically, academically, and professionally.

Projects proposed by the Student Chapter and funded through the AWM Student Chapter Innovation Grant should be completed within 10 months of approval. Student Chapters will be required to submit an Impact Report to ed.admin@awm-math.org within the year. The Impact Report should contain written details about:

  • The event(s) or activity that took place as part of the grant, and
  • Any presentations, products, other materials, or outcomes as a result of the event(s) or activity.

Eligibility criteria:

Any registered AWM Student Chapter in good standing who has not received this grant in the past two years is eligible to apply. Your chapter is eligible if

  1. Your chapter appears on this page: https://awm-math.org/programs/student-chapters-info/current-student-chapters-list/, and
  2. Your chapter president is listed on that page (indicating that you have enrolled your student chapter members in the AWM)

Grant Recipients must submit a final reporton or before September 30 of the following year.

Application procedure: The President or another representative of the Student Chapter should apply the form linked below between August 15 and October 15. Grant recipients will be informed before November 15.

The purpose of the Association for Women in Mathematics is to create a community in which women and girls can thrive in their mathematical endeavors and to promote equitable opportunity and gender-inclusivity across the mathematical sciences.

A brief letter of support from your faculty advisor or your department head is required.  The purpose of this letter is to confirm that there is institutional support for the proposed project.  It should include details of the financial or in-kind support being provided locally in order to ensure that the project is successful.

Proposal Evaluation

Eligible applications will be forwarded to  selection committee, which will be asked to rank the proposals and make one of the following recommendations for each of the proposals:

● The proposal is well-conceived, and the project is likely to have a significant impact beyond their student chapter.
● The proposal is strong, but the impact is more localized than those with the highest ranking.
● The proposal had the following deficiencies (provide a list).
