EvenQuads

EvenQuads Game deck: The deck consists of 64 cards. Each card has one of four symbols, that appears 1-4 times, in one of four colors.

Number of players: 1 or more.

Ages: 10 and up.

All the variations of this game revolve around collecting Quads. The Quad Collector game was developed by Dr. Lauren Rose and Jeffrey Pereira. 

Cards feature three attributes and four possible values for each attribute. The attributes are 

  • the type of symbol featured on the card. This attribute takes values Spiral, Polyhedron, Circle, or Square; see these four symbols on the example cards above, 
  • the color of the symbols; these can be green, blue, pink, or yellow, and 
  • the number of symbols on the card: 1, 2, 3, or 4.

A Quad consists of four cards that, simultaneously and for each attribute, must feature

  • the same value of the attribute (example: all four cards have the same number of symbols), or
  • distinct values of attributes (example: all cards have different symbols), or
  • two cards with one value of an attribute and the other two cards with another value of the same attribute (example: two cards have green symbols and two cards have pink symbols).

Use the 16 cards that are all the same color (or that have the same symbol, or have the same number of symbols).

Set-up: The dealer lays out six cards.

Game Play: 

  • All players look for Quads, without touching the cards.
  • Someone who finds a Quad yells “Quad!” and indicates the four cards in the Quad to the other players.
  • The player who correctly calls “Quad!” takes the four Quad cards and the dealer deals four more cards.
  • If the player is incorrect, the cards are put back on the table. 
  • If no player finds a Quad, one additional card is dealt out.
  • The game ends when the deck is empty and the players agree that there are no Quads on the table.

The winner is the player who collected the most Quads.

Example: Using only the cards with the spiral symbol, the following cards have been dealt:

After looking at these six cards, we can find the following two Quads:

There is at least one more Quad that may be found in those six cards. Can you find it?

  • The game ends when the deck is depleted and there are no Quads on the table.
  • The winner is the player who collected the most Quads.

Because these eight cards yield no Quads, the dealer deals one more card. It is:

Both the Beginner and Regular games described above can be played in a solitaire mode. In this scenario, the single player is both dealer and player. To win, a player must make Quads from the entire deck, with no cards left over. The game may end without a winner if the cards remaining on the table do not form any Quads.
