Two research areas in psychology and education hold promise for understanding performance and persistence in mathematics, 20 3 M/J '90, 7
Cognitive psychology's focus is not only on achievement/actual problem solving, but on student thoughts and awareness (self-regulatory, metacognitive) activities during the process of problem solving, 20 3 M/J '90, 7
Women and mathematics' focus is no only on achievement, but on affective, motivational, and attributional beliefs associated with achievement and persistence in taking mathematics courses, 20 3 M/J '90, 7
Ford Foundation project to develop an assessment tool for use by teachers and students in junior high math classrooms, through formation of national advisory board, teacher focus groups, and testing various questionnaires, 20 3 M/J '90, 7
Mathematics Assessment Questionnaire (MAQ), a survey of thoughts and feelings of 7th-9th grade students, is prototype for data collection on particular aspects of mathematics education, 20 3 M/J '90, 7
MAQ provides information on student thoughts and feelings of the teaching and learning of solving word problems, providing complementary information to teacher assessments of mathematical knowledge and procedures or standardized achievement tests, 20 3 M/J '90, 7
MAQ focuses on junior high years, when many students make critical decisions about continuing with the standard curriculum, 20 3 M/J '90, 7-8
MAQ encourages teachers to examine several areas for instructional planning based on the students' reflections on/awareness of cognitive activities/thoughts when solving individual, nonroutine word problems and when learning about word problems in three settings: teacher-led direct classroom instruction, working in student groups to solve a problem, and doing homework, 20 3 M/J '90, 8
Other constructs in class settings are: affective beliefs of interest, value, confidence, and anxiety; motivational beliefs of internal learning and external performance goals; and beliefs about attributions of causes for success/failure in working word problems, 20 3 M/J '90, 8
Current project work is preparation of two products and development of next steps in making MAQ accessible for classroom teacher use, 20 3 M/J '90, 8
User manual includes sample student/class responses and instructional strategies to assist teachers in use of questionnaire data, 20 3 M/J '90, 8
Technical report includes descriptions of project development and analyses of 1988 questionnaire data from 1700 students, which support the original design for the assessment questionnaire, 20 3 M/J '90, 8
Next steps on project to prepare prototype microcomputer-based questionnaire form and to feld test formats in which information is perceived as meaningful and useful to teachers and students, 20 3 M/J '90, 8
MAQ is a model of an assessment instrument intended to help teachers focus on attitudes and beliefs girls have about mathematics that discourage persistence in solving mathematical problems and encourage perceptions of themselves as unsuccessful in mathematics, 20 3 M/J '90, 8

To sustain parental involvement, parent/student activities established: orientation sessions, Learning Styles Workshop, Math For Fun Fair, etc., 20 3 M/J '90, 9
Academic progress monitored by UMTYMP counselor with continued emphasis on regular counseling contacts with parents, 20 3 M/J '90, 9

Women in the Origins of Modern Science by Londa Schiebinger, 20 4 J/A '90, 8-11
Culturally constructed categories can be mistaken for dictates of nature, 20 4 J/A '90, 8
Stephen Jay Gould in The Mismeasure of Man states that if society did not assume people of different racial/ethnic origins had different mental capacities, it would not try to measure those differences, 20 4 J/A '90, 8
Similarly framed investigations and the policymaking based on those results have not ceased to exist, 20 4 J/A '90, 8
Victorian-era scientists discovered an array of data that confirmed their social prejudices about women, although much of at , demonstrated by Russett, could not have withstood rigorous scrutiny even at the time it was presented, 20 4 J/A '90, 8-9
Schiebinger suggests that these scientific assertions resulted from the failure to recognize that the practice of scientists is externally constrained by the assumptions they share with other members oftheir society, 20 4 J/A '90, 9
Scientists drawn to investigate differences between genders have almost always framed their research in terms of explaining the superiority of one and the inferiority of the other and usually found what they sought, 20 4 J/A '90, 9
The university has been much less sympathetic to scientific aspirations of women than were the guild and the salon, 20 4 J/A '90, 9-10
Russett believes contemporary scientists have identified and discarded the biases that led their Victorian predecessors into the errors she documents, and are therefore likely to be more objective, more scientific in their research, 20 4 J/A '90, 10
Schiebinger suggests that the work of scientists will continue to embody the patterns of the past as long as the assumptions that underlie those patterns persist in society, 20 4 J/A '90, 10

"Are Student Ratings Unfair to Women?" Neal Koblitz, 20 5 S/O '90, 17-19
If female instructors want to obtain high student ratings, they must be highly competent and careful to act in accordance with traditional sex role expectations (stereotypically feminine behavior/nurturing mother figure), 20 5 S/O '90, 17
Difficulty for women occurs when needing to adopt "get-tough" attitude, since only the most serious and mature students are likely to respond with high ratings, with most students inclined to "punish" the instructor, more severely if an instructor is female, 20 5 S/O '90, 17
Classroom study shows male students more likely to give lower ratings to hard-grading women and both sexes judged more harshly female authority figures engaging in punitive behavior than punitive males, 20 5 S/O '90, 17
Another study found women rated highly only if especially accessible and spend a lot of time with them (gender appropriate expectation), yet men receive equally high ratings while remaining aloof (to spend most of their time on research/non-teaching activities), 20 5 S/O '90, 17
Mathematics departments are at a special disadvantage if administrators/faculty in other departments have excessive confidence in student rating numbers and value of cross-department comparisons, 20 5 S/O '90, 18
Conclusions: 1. Student ratings can provide valuable feedback to instructor themselves but not propoerly understood by those unfamiliar with nature of course, student characteristics and pedagogical objectives of the instructor; 2. Very specific questions less likely to invite biased responses than general questions; 3. Often in math departments, students tend to discriminate against women instructors on rating forms; 4. Math departments and administrators have an ethical and legal obligation not to base promotion/salary decisions on data biased against women, 20 5 S/O '90, 18

For individuals, rather large differences in SAT scores are not statistically significant, a fact not well enough appreciated by users of SAT scores, but for the population of all test takers, the differences between males and females is highly significant. It is reasonable to look into and question simplistic conclusions such as innate ability, but unreasonable to dismiss differences as statistically insignificant, 20 6 N/D '90, 6

Evidence exists that Putnam achieves its intended goals, but causes negative effects, mainly because of its difficulty, 20 6 N/D '90, 8-9
Success on the Competition requires mathematical ability and problem-solving experience, but also a 'Putnam temperament,' ability to work quickly, independently without references and willingness to consider problems out of context, 20 6 N/D '90, 9
Putnam (only a test) plays valuable, but ultimately inessential role in undergraduate mathematics, 20 6 N/D '90, 9

    Themes:
    1.  All fields of natural science are best analyzed from within the social sciences, of which they are logically a part, rather than taken as external models for the social sciences;
    2.  Exploration of relation between the development of powerful models and bodies of knowledge in Western science and the continuous creation and displacement of parties often excluded from science, who are often objects of study, like Third World peoples, women, sexual minorities, the poor, and nature itself;
    3. A belief in the power of democratizing scientific personnel, subjects, and objects, 22 6 N/D '92, 15-16
